Give me a break. With everything going on the Council is engrossed in this stupid Sharon Zadra pet project. How about working on creating jobs, providing service, engaging in some oversight to avoid multi-million dollar cost overruns, etc. etc. We don’t care about the floral arrangements in downtown!
Perennials Like the Mexican Evening Primrose.
Water, let grow, keep watering.
Any Questions?
This is a ridiculous waste of money, funded or not. It costs more to water the baskets than they are worth.
Plus it is like putting lipstick on a pig.
Homeless, people out of work, families trying to over come sudden deaths. Yeah, we really need donations for flowers down town.
The flower baskets are something that the city council should be doing. They are an inexpensive way to really beutify the downtown ares. Possibly there should be some volunteer effort and this is what a community does. By the way how does it cost $110 for each basket and over $8000 for a 5 month watering schedule? The city has a greenhouse and they use to have classes on making the baskets – how could they possibly not have volunteers to do this? Further, with regard to 8,000 for watering, with efficeincies of scale I cannot believe this is a full time position. Hire temporary labor for 2 hours a day and your looking at 100, maybe 200 a week, not the 500 plus they are charging.
How about if we take donations for our teachers! Forget the hanging baskets. What a joke!!
Always amusing to read the comments of those who fail to see the big picture. No flowers downtown = much uglier downtown = even worse appearing to tourists than before = less tourists = less sales tax revenue = less money for our education system. Ever hear of the broken window theory?
Go ahead, talk it out…… BUT NO TOUCHING !!!!!
Where will this tom foolery end?!?! What next, will scenic Nevada go after all the taxis with the brothel ads on them? Please say it ain’t so!!
Scenic Nevada is being petty and ridiculous. Just accept the fact that the sign is up to code. They are obviously trying to be a pain in Keshmiri’s you know what. If I was him, I would just ignore the group, it has already been ruled that the sign is in compliance. These Scenic Nevada people need to get a life.
Just talk it out– some judicial back bone there.
Our City Counsel does not keep track of what the city does with money. They just find more and more ways to spend money and hire someone else to keep track of it. Can we all say “incompetent?”
Basically, Reno is ran and managed by rubes..
Why doesn’t Carson City have all these problems?
As I recall, Gallina’s report, while it didn’t highlight it with bold CAPS in red ink with catchy doodads all over the page, embodied the information that it should have. Accountants’ financial analyses would not make it in a Hollywood atmosphere, primarily because their clients pay good money for them, with the intention of reading them, dull as they may be. This council – apparently none of the members individually or collectively – sat down and read the report they paid for. Maybe Kafoury could deliver them a PowerPoint with sound and the Bud girls and Chippendale men turning the pages, that would hit them right between their eyes, because the printed word sure as hell didn’t work…
Why shoot the messenger? Terminate the staff members that created this inexcusable mess and get quality and capable people as replacements…there should be no problem finding well trained professional people capable of handling these positions..the unemployment rate here in the Reno area is over 14%!
If my client ignored my report then criticized me in the media I wouldn’t call him back either
How many times can someone try to force you to change a sign that they find distasteful before you get to sue them for harassment? The folks from Scenic Nevada need to get a life that doesn’t involve trying to enforce their concept of good taste on someone else. If the sign bothers them that much they should make the owner an offer he can’t refuse on the whole property, other wise they should leave him the heck alone and look the other way when they go by.
umm, excuse me…the whole interstate is littered with billboards. A lot bigger than that tiny little Wild Orchid sign. Don’t we have bigger fish to fry in this city?
give it up already.
make these carpet baggers prove that they have “an interest” in the area in question. otherwise, +1 to what dww had to say, “if they don’t like it, BUY IT”
Don’t forget the Chamber of Commerce. They’re the biggest whiners about the Wild Orchid sign. Since they can plainly see it from their new office digs they are taking any cheap shot they can to get rid of this sign, It wouldn’t matter if the sign was completely in compliance. It offends the Chambers questionable sensibilities and makes you wonder if there are any other legal, legitimate businesses out there that the Chamber of Commerce has a problem with.
Sounds an awful lot like a short sale. But best get it while CommRow has any money. Because after visitng this operation last weekend I cannot see how it will still be in buisness in 18 months. It looks like a poorly thought out business model to me.
Not counting Panama.
I’m not that great with numbers, but I think I understand.
Reno purchased the land for $6 million. Then it sells the same land back to Leal for $2.5 million.
That leaves $3.5 million in debt that the citizens of Reno end up paying for down the road (not including interest).
I think I’m gonna get sick.
it seems to me, that fernando already owns it, he just decided to quit making his payments. let him catch up the past due amount, and he should be back in good standing with the bank once again. plus a few fees here and there.
seems like it must be time to quit giving these proven failure developers a blank check to rip off the city over and over. unless of course there is a CASH HELL in the receiving end of a deal
Isn’t cashell involved in this? This stinks – just like any business deals involving cashell and reno.
Hey Duggan, when the city refinances these bonds are they going to be secured by the general fund? As I understand it when these bonds were issued they were secured by their own revenue source (ie the payments from the garage and the lease payments from the properties obtained from condemnation by RETRAC). If this is in fact what the city is doing then report this. The city never originally put its name on these bonds and should not now assume the obligation to support private business.
